About Myers Park

Myers Park is regarded as one of North America's premier historic neighborhoods. Originally Myers farm, it was developed by George Stephens and John Nolen as a street car community where residents could walk to the street car lines and where the streets would loop themselves. What sets Myers Park apart from other neighborhoods are the dense canopy of tree-lined streets, impressive landscapes, winding streets and sidewalks, and early twentieth century architecture. Today, Myers Park is alive with neighborhood cafe's, runners enjoying the shade of the canopy, and residents enjoying the many parks through the community.

Real Estate in Myers Park
Myers Park offers a diverse array of housing options from condominiums to single family homes and even two co-ops. Because of the historic significance of many of the homes, most are substantially renovated and expanded with only a few being torn down. While most homes have basements, they are more of a cellar with most still having the coal shutes still in place.

A 3,000 sq. ft. single family home starts around $600,000 and it may or may not include a garage. Since most homes were originally constructed in the 20's, most garages were added later on with many being detached. Find your dream home in Myers Park.

Buyers looking for a home in Myers Park need to be aware of the following:

  • Burried underground oil tanks: During the transition from coal to oil, many of the homes had oil tanks buried in the yard to hold fuel. When the transition from oil to gas occured, the underground tanks were filled with sand and the filler necks cut off. If your plans involve installing a swimming pool, it is absolutely critical that you located your storage tank and find out the cost for removing it. It can be expensive.
  • Updated plumbing and wiring: With most of the homes being constructed in the twenties and thirties, knob and tube wiring was how a home was serviced then. Today, knob and tube wiring is not acceptable with many lenders and insurance companies refusing coverage on such homes. If the home never had the plumbing lines updated, it may have galvanized plumbing which has a tendancy to rust from the inside out.
  • Radon: Radon is very common in Myers Park and a radon test on the main level of the home is absolutely essential. Remediation involves the installation of a radon fan and vent similar to a chimney.
