Matthews North Carolina, located in southern Mecklenburg county, is great place to call home. However, there are 4 things that makes calling Matthews home all the better. Here is my list:
Killer Breakfast Spot: Stacks Kitchen
The line of people waiting to get in on the weekend should be evidence enough that Stacks is something special. While Matthews is also home to a Cracker Barrel, the locals know that Stacks is the place to go. If you’re from the northeast, you’ll quickly recognize the diner with its fresh bakery case, the counter bar and the all-day breakfast menu.
“Good food and lots of it” is their motto and it’s 100% true. Everything there is good but the french toast is exceptional. Then, on the way out, grab a loaf of their homemade bread.
The Ultimate Hardware Store: Renfrows Hardware
Renfrows has serious competition from both Lowes and Home Depot (also in Matthews) but there’s something completely incredible about Renfrows. Maybe it’s that it’s the only place in town where you can get both a baby chicken and a sled?
In all seriousness, if you’re into gardening, Renfrows has got you covered from seeds, equipment, and even starters. Plus, it’s one of the few places left where they actually cut duplicate keys by hand. Finally, one of the best treats at Renfrows is the large ice chest filled with glass bottle sodas.
The Matthews Farmers Market in downtown Matthews is a Saturday morning-must visit.
While the Charlotte Farmers Market out by Charlotte-Douglas Airport is incredible, having a farmers market right in Matthews is really convenient. Located right in downtown Matthews, the Farmers Market is a popular destination on Saturday mornings for those looking for fresh fruit, vegetables, baked goods, dairy and meat. The crowds arrive early so by 10:30am, most of everything is gone. However, if you’re an early riser, the farmers market will reward you.

The Parks and Trails
The town of Matthews has some of the best park and recreation facilities in Mecklenburg county. A few years back, the town endeavored on an overhaul of their parks, starting with completely rebuilding the facilities at Squirrel Lake Park. From there, they created the Four Mile Creek Greenway. Now, they’re building a $32M sportsplex that is second to none in the area. Phase one of the Matthews Sportsplex is complete and it includes astroturf soccer, lacrosse, and football fields as well as bathroom facilities and a small playground. When the other phases are completed, there will be more parking, more fields, and even a stadium that can hold 2,700 people!
Additionally, the Four Mile Creek Greenway winds its way from the the Matthews firehouse, through the woods along Four Mile Creek and over to Squirrel Lake Park and ends on E. John Street. When the sportsplex site plan is complete, the new entrance to the park will be adjacent to the current end of the greenway.
The Best Movie Theater in Charlotte
The two best movie theaters in the Charlotte area are on the outskirts of Charlotte: Carolina Cinemas on Monroe Road in Crownpoint and Cinebarre in the Arboretum. Both serve adult beverages, have a decent menu and many screens. However, I tend to give the edge to Carolina Cinemas for one thing: large electric recliners. After experiencing a movie on what is essentially a leather couch, sipping a craft beer with my feet in the air, it’s hard to go back to a traditional movie theater. Plus, at Carolina Cinemas, you can order online an pick your seat ahead of time.
The AMC 22 on South Blvd in Charlotte is undergoing a similar renovation, which will replace their traditional seats with the large leather recliners as well. They are still exploring the option of adding a bar inside the lobby.
